Wonderwater Café, Kiasma
Helsinki, Finland

Earlier this year, Wonderwater Café could be found at the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, inviting diners to discover the water footprint of dishes from the Café Kiasma menu. On the menu was Cured Elk salad, with a relatively low water footprint due to the wild game meat, and pudding flavored with cinnamon from water scarce Israel amongst others.

Studio EMMI also worked on the Clear Channel Wonderwater Campaign promoting the Café around the streets of Helsinki.

Water Footprint
The water footprint is a new but increasingly important tool for understanding our water consumption. We use large amounts of domestic water for washing, drinking and cooking, but considerably more water for producing food, paper, cotton and almost every other physical product we consume. In Finland the daily domestic water use per person is 150 litres, while the total daily water footprint, including water used in the production of food and products consumed, amounts to 3,873 litres per person. Agriculture accounts for a massive 92% of the global water footprint, so diet is by far the biggest slice of an individual’s footprint.

Peepshow Collective
Book design for Index Book

Latest book design by Studio EMMI, Peepshow Collective, is a chance to delve into the Peepshow imagination, scanning collective and individual work from the past decade and glimpsing future directions. It's also a rare chance to see behind the pixels, an interview with all of Peepshow's members offering their take on where they start, when they decide to stop, and what happens in between.

image

image

image

image

image

image

image

image

Peepshow has achieved a rare alchemy: corralling a set of unique visual talents into a cohesive, and hugely influential, collective. Over the past decade, the London based group have worked across illustration, animation, set design, textiles and art direction for such clients as the Victoria & Albert Museum, M&C Saatchi, BBC, The New York Times and SHOWstudio, while also creating their own work for books, exhibitions and events worldwide. They’ve represented the best of British image-making at expos for The British Council and The Museum of Modern Art in Japan, and have featured in shows at the ICA, the Hayward Gallery and Somerset House.

Despite, or because of, their focus on the individual, Peepshow as a group have become a force to be reckoned with. Instead of fitting themselves into a pre-existing mould, the ten members have together created their own market.

image

image

image

Peepshow is Luke Best, Jenny Bowers, Miles Donovan, Chrissie Macdonald, Pete Mellor, Marie O’Connor, Andrew Rae, Elliot Thoburn, Lucy Vigrass and Spencer Wilson.

Peepshow Collective's Museum of Objects & Origins
Exhibition Graphics
Pick Me Up at Somerset House, London, UK

image

image

image

The Museum of Objects & Origins was a collection of artefacts including drawings, objects, prints and costumes. Exhibiting items from an invented past, the collection was also a living, growing display as themed workshops created new works to fill the final few cabinets. Studio EMMI created the Museum's identity and exhibition graphics.

Museum of Objects & Origins was set up by the artist in residence Peepshow Collective at Pick Me Up, the UK’s first annual contemporary graphic art fair, returned for its biggest edition yet in March 2012. The fair showcased the best new work from around the UK and the world with original works and prints available to purchase and a multitude of events and workshops to take part in.

Wonderwater Fozen Lights
Helsinki, Finland

Wonderwater Frozen Lights was a dramatic installation of ice lanterns in Helsinki’s Senate Square to celebrate the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012, Finland. The display aimed to help raise awareness of the water footprint. Two massive ice blocks from Lapland each represented the water footprint of 3 873 litres used daily per person in Finland, while 150 litre ice lanterns represented the domestic use per person in Finland.

Illuminating the darkest season of the year, Wonderwater invited designers and architects to sculpt lanterns on site. The designer teams included: Artek Studio, Ilkka Suppanen, Team Brita Flander, Sebastian Jansson & MottoWasabi, Architect Group A6 and Team Aalto University. In the sprit of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 theme of openness and collaboration, the people of Helsinki were invited to participate by designing their own ice lantern and bringing it to the event.

Studio Emmi has designed both the Wonderwater and Wonderwater Frozen Lights logos.

The Sleep School
UK

Studio EMMI has designed the identity for The Sleep School, which teaches a highly effective and drug-free approach to treating insomnia. The Sleep School’s approach is centred on what good sleepers do to sleep, which is nothing more than trusting their body’s natural ability to sleep. They help clients to understand that their natural desire to want to ‘do’ things to get to sleep may well satisfy an internal desire ‘to fix’ but it could only be pushing sleep further away. Their approach teaches clients to not let the ‘controlling side’ in all of us get in the way of this natural process and how to make space for, or even play with, any fears associated with not sleeping, something that allows sleep to emerge naturally once more.

The Prince's Foundation for Children & the Arts
UK

For the fifth year running Studio EMMI has designed the annual review for The Prince's Foundation for Children & the Arts. A recent study, commissioned by Visit Birmingham, found four in 10 British children had never been to an art gallery, while a quarter of parents had never taken their offspring to the theatre.

Early engagement with the arts has a positive impact on young people: raising aspirations, increasing confidence, improving communication skills and unlocking creativity. The Prince's Foundation for Children & the Arts champion the power of the arts to transform lives and strive towards a future where all children in the UK gain access to the arts.

Shopikon business cards
New York, London, Vienna & Barcelona

We have designed the logo and business cards for Shopikon, an online and App based guide with a focus on the best locally owned stores in a given city, first launching with New York, Vienna, Barcelona and London.

image

image

image

Shopikon covers stores that combine great products, an inspired selection and a unique personal vibe into an experience of shopping as it should be in an ideal world. The primary criteria for selection are an exceptional assortment of products, quality, and unique personality. They cover everything from bookstores, to boutiques, butchers, furniture, flowers and farmer’s markets. After scouring the streets to find them, the shops are reviewed, photographed, and written-up by Shopikon editors so you can find the store that’s right for you.

Contemporary Art Archipelago
Finland

Part of European Capital of Culture 2011, Contemporary Art Archipelago (CAA) exhibition consists of over 20 new site-specific art works and events realised in the Turku archipelago, Finland, by international and local artists during the Summer 2011, between 18th June and 30th September.

Studio EMMI has been on charge of the overall visual identity of this outdoor exhibition, including items such as signage, leaflets, posters and programmes.

image

image

Contemporary Art Archipelago, an exhibition across the isles can be encountered from the cruise ships and small boats, along the roads and virtually, on a remote islet, in the sea, on the airwaves, on the ferries or even
in a private home.

image

image

image

image

The theme is the archipelago and its future as a unique yet changing environment and mode of life. The context of the Baltic Sea is strongly present, yet CAA reflects the specificities of Turku archipelago also against other similar environments and global changes. The artists examine, amongst others, alternative island lifestyles and livelihoods, transformations in ecological and cultural diversity, as well as desires projected onto islands and across the sea. The art works take the form of, for example, an island’s own mobile network, an alternative map on a ferry, personal stories on the changing climate, cinematic sci-fi visions of the archipelago, underwater gardening or a frail meadow of glass.

Artek Product Catalogue 2011

Studio EMMI provides a wide range of design services on an on-going basis for Artek, one of the most recents projects being the design of the entire Artek product catalogue. The graphics explain and celebrate the products’ beauty and functionality alongside the more rigid technical specifications and product information.

image

image

image

image

image

Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. Advocating a new kind of environment for everyday life, they believed in a grand synthesis of the arts and wanted to make a difference in town planning as well as architecture and design. Today, while still deeply rooted in these values, Artek has entered a new era, combining the radical ideology of the founders with a modern and dynamic approach to product development.

Prince's Foundation for Children & the Arts Annual Review

For fourth year running, Studio EMMI has designed the Annual Review for The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts. Children & the Arts is an educational charity committed to helping children experience the arts in a high quality and sustained way. They provide access for young people who would otherwise grow up having had no or very limited opportunity to engage with the arts. Children who take part are drawn from both urban and rural areas of deprivation and come from a variety of backgrounds. Many have behavioural and learning difficulties.

If you’d like to support their projects in 2011 and are on a lookout for some fun and unique Christmas cards, then look no further. Children and the Arts are selling Season’s Greetings cards with fantastic designs – all of which have been selected from drawings, paintings and collages sent in by children involved in Children & the Arts projects and put together by Studio EMMI, as part of our Common Good scheme. You can order cards online here.
